Stepping Softly variant 1
© 2024
Edition of unique artists book
Dimensions in inches (closed): 4 x 10.8 x .75

Materials
Book: paper, ink, mica, specimens, leather, thread

Stepping Softly variant 2 was created with origami rectangular trays. Each box contains a loose 'page' of natural specimens encapsulated in sheets of mica. The boxes are mounted to both sides of an accordion structure, two per side, on alternating panels. The original text, by Alicia Bailey, is handwritten, in walnut ink, on the panels without boxes.

The paper used for the boxes is multi-run relief prints of various leaves, over dyed with cold water fabric dye. The accordion is rag printmaking paper, laser etched and over dyed. Covers are goat with back pared leather and paper onlays, embellished with cotton embroidery. Belly bands hold the book closed.

Full text:

I stand barefoot--

warm skin to cool dirt.

I stifle the urge to

sing long, loud and off-key

(as that is my way.

To move, to dance.

Instead I step softly.

I imagine my

queitude spreading.

A radical act.

I share space with rocs

trees and grasses.

With light and shadow.

With water and air.

With ants and spiders,

birds and bees.

With motion.

With stillness I am able to

watch, to her, to feel

instead of merely seeing.
