For decades I’ve been searching out places that evoke a particular quality of silence – I think of this as mineral silence. In the late 20th Century, I often visited the Wheeler Geologic Area in the La Garita Mountains of southwestern Colorado where I lived for many years.

This image is from a series of six gelatin silver prints printed from 120mm film in my bathroom darkroom, then forgotten for a time. Recently remembered, I over-painted the images with oils and mounted them on a cradled birch panel.
