About this piece:
This is one of three bird boxes that started with my great-aunt’s archive. In addition to three wood, hinged boxes the archive included several ‘birds on sticks’ – a low-tech, low budget means of preserving small birds. To Value Goodness – Mourning Dove includes 2 rigid pages (.3 thick) bound on a cloth hinge with board covers. Images are archival digital prints made from scans of a stuffed mourning doves, an original colored pencil drawing on wood and a dimensional collage using bird feathers, each page protected with a mica glazing. The book covers are covered with suede, the front cover has a recessed paper label overlaid with mica. The box interior has a recessed compartment with a mourning dove protected by an overglaze of mica. The top inside of the lid has an original photograph taken in the 40’s; the outside lid has an enlargement of the same photograph, with the title etched in a protective layer of mica. Sandwiched between the photo and the mica is free floating morning dove feather.
